ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates how the intersection of Latinx and first- generation college student identities influences the campus experiences of students. Latinx students are a growing population within higher education and are likely to be first-generation in college. The chapter provides a synthesis of current research pertaining to issues that influence the college experience of first-generation Latinx students. It provides guidance on how the challenges to students can be mitigated for first-generation Latinx students from a multilayered, asset-based approach. First-generation Latinx students may uphold a strong sense of responsibility, respect, and loyalty for their families that influences the way they navigate collegiate environments. The chapter highlights the importance of Latinx students connecting with professionals who can relate to their experiences as well as the importance of peers in supporting student success.
