ABSTRACT

College knowledge is the information and resources students need to navigate through the higher education system and is found to be one of the four most significant predictors of enrollment in higher education. Students who receive college knowledge from their families, schools, or communities have an advantage. One distinct aspect of college knowledge is the language and acronyms that institutions use to create their own jargon. Simple changes, like explaining what jargon means or using more universal language, can help first-generation college students decode the jumble of jargon we have created in higher education. As educators, we should know that it is our role to introduce people to concepts and assist people along their learning journey.
