ABSTRACT

Strong advising, support, and the reduction of unnecessary barriers are keys to helping first-generation college students transfer from 2-to 4-year institutions. First-generation college students offer much to the educational institutions they inhabit. There is an imbalance between teachers set to retire in the next decade and the pipeline to replace those teachers. Support mechanisms are critical to student success, and they are inextricably linked to strong advising. Licensure changes at the state level continually impact program requirements as well. The requirements of our partner schools and the state requirements for teacher certification do not always align with the requirements for the Teacher Education Program at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s.
