ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores ways in which higher education professionals and institutions can better understand and, more important, better serve Native students. It examines the experiences of first-year Native students and the role of a Native living/learning community in student retention. The book also explores the unique cultural needs of Native students and offer a model for incorporating culture into all aspects of student programming for Native students. It focuses on various aspects of institutional efforts and interactions with Native people. The book addresses the emerging role of the special advisor to the president on Native American affairs position. It discusses the role of professional associations in assisting student affairs professionals with fulfilling their role of supporting the success of Native American students, staff, and faculty in higher education.
