ABSTRACT

Professional associations in student affairs can and should play an important role in supporting student affairs professionals in efforts to address racial and ethnic differences in higher education. This chapter explores the role of professional associations in assisting student affairs professionals to fulfill their role supporting the success of Native American students, staff, and faculty in higher education. It provides a review of the historical roots of professional associations in student affairs and then addresses the interaction between social movements and professional associations. The chapter focuses on the contemporary roles of professional associations, particularly those in student affairs. It then presents an overview of the involvement of Native Americans in various associations and also provides practical examples for future consideration. The chapter identifies several ideas and practical applications for national associations to consider when involving, working with, and engaging their Native American members.
