ABSTRACT

Too often the literature and recommendations presented in courses and workshops and at conferences and summits omit, or fail to include, information and recommendations on the experiences of, or how to work with, Native American students, simply because data on this population are not statistically significant. Many institutions have a dedicated staff member such as an advisor on Native American affairs or a dedicated program whose directive is to coordinate with tribal communities. Other institutions have active memorandums of understanding with tribal programs, tribal colleges, or tribal communities. Cultural competency should be addressed and assessed throughout student affairs programs. Cultural competence is commonly misunderstood as knowing everything there is to know about a certain culture to serve people of that culture competently. Fulfilling a practicum and/or internship requirement in a Native student services office, or a multicultural affairs office, can provide a rich and comprehensive experience for the graduate student enrolled in a student affairs program.
