ABSTRACT

The Deaf Studies ePortfolio Sequence (DSES) is a set of practices integrated into a core ePortfolio template that students use throughout a four-semester sequence of American Sign Language (ASL) courses. In the field of Deaf Studies, there are three main careers: sign language interpreter, teacher of the deaf, or allied professions that work with the deaf. Effective social pedagogy requires process and authentic audience, purpose and identity, and a learning culture. HIPs are effective because of the devotion of considerable time and effort to a purposeful task. The DSES is bookended by two institutional HIPs: a first-year seminar and a capstone course. In a variety of ways, the DSES addresses three sectors within the Catalyst Framework : Professional Development, Scaling Up, and Technology. The most visible evidence of impact is the reduction in the number of career counseling visits to the office of the program advisor.
