ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ways clickers can help bring the research process to life for students. It briefly examines the available evidence on using clickers to teach research. The chapter then presents examples of creative ways that clickers can be used to illustrate research and match those approaches with key learning goals. This finding has been reviewed extensively elsewhere, and general recommendations for the instructional use of clickers have been developed. The use of clickers in classroom settings has been shown to have considerable potential for improving student engagement and success. The chapter presents a detailed case study that describes how clickers can be used to facilitate a term-long, in-class research project. The course research project follows a common study trajectory: conceptualization, design, data collection, and analysis. One of the most important lessons of this activity is the pleasure of testing our assumptions against the reality of data.
