ABSTRACT

The tutors in the Learning Commons at Tallahassee Community College deal with more than 11,000 unique students per semester; in order to ensure that the services are comprehensible and consistent, the authors train their tutors using a program that is nationally accredited by the College Reading and Learning Association. This program requires tutors to complete a certain number of face-to-face training hours covering topics such as study skills, learning styles, and other more sensitive topics like handling difficult students. Using clickers helps keep tutors engaged in the subject matter, helps deal with time constraints, encourages more reticent tutors to participate, and appeals to a variety of learners. Clickers give reticent tutors the courage to speak up even i f they are only doing so through the click of the button, and they ensure that everyone participates. Using clickers helps ensure that everyone is participating and having his or her voice heard.
