ABSTRACT

Frequency analysis, significance testing, and content analysis comprised the three methods used to analyze both the open-ended and multiple-choice survey question formats. The purpose component results are discussed first as frequencies and followed by brief, interview excerpt examples. However, given that many institutional initiatives in which directors are involved focus on teaching, learning, and academic programs, at a broader level, it is difficult to determine from the purpose component alone if the mission statements reflect this broader organizational development role. Analysis of the purpose component further identifies the focus of center missions. However, based on the case study interviews, director knowledge and expertise is strongly supported as a primary factor enabling organizational development. The purpose component of marginalized centers (6%) focused their center purposes on providing central resources and some variation in serving or nurturing faculty. The recommendations that follow are included as a guide for the collaborative process of reviewing and revising center mission statements.
