ABSTRACT

This chapter describes self-care from a holistic and multifaceted perspective and emphasizes the importance of working together to create self-care cultures among academic advising professionals and advising teams. Emphasizing self-care practices and cultures can add value to academic advisors’ lives and the lives of their colleagues and the students they serve. In the emotional dimension, emotional wellness is derived from recognizing and accepting feelings and remaining optimistic. There are a variety of best practices to consider when designing a strategy for promoting self-care within academic advising. Advising professionals are recognizing the importance of work-life balance to mitigate the effects of fatigue and burnout. Advising professionals work in a busy, demanding environment with an aim to retain students and foster academic success. The culture of an academic advising unit is tied to an institution’s mission, which means self-care can be promoted at the personal, departmental, and institutional levels.
