ABSTRACT

Well-structured and organized academic advisor training can provide an essential foundation for those responsible for the delivery of academic advising. This chapter reviews the specific steps to design and create an effective academic advisor training and development program. It introduces an instructional design approach to academic advisor training. The chapter address considerations for the design of comprehensive advisor training and development programs. It provides advising practitioners with an introduction to instructional design models, many campuses have specific instructional designers that can serve as resources for training and the design of programs. The identification of learners plays a significant role in any needs analysis and subsequently the focus of the advisor training program. Academic advising is a key component of the educational mission of higher education. Therefore, the development and launch of effective advisor training and development are crucial to the institution, advising profession, and student success.
