ABSTRACT

Integrating concepts presented through Bloom’s taxonomy of knowledge, Fink’s taxonomy of significant learning, Kirkpatrick’s model for training, and Maki’s learning model, this chapter provides an assessment model for AT&D. It apply examples of each stage of the AT&D assessment model with reflections on building a culture that promotes ongoing learning for advisors and sustains assessment of learning. Assessment can be imprecise because of potential errors in instruments, analysis, and interpretation of findings. Assessment and evaluation are interconnected but have distinct meanings and purposes. The model of assessment of academic advising applied in the chapter was adapted from Maki’s model of assessment in higher education and revised over time to fully demonstrate each phase of assessment of academic advising. Finally, assessment brings change, and change may bring resistance. Academic advising is central to student success initiatives and requires ongoing AT&D for those administering the programs.
