ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides different takes on history and service-learning. It presents a series of steps that provide an answer to the how-to question——how to integrate service-learning into a history course. The book argues that service-learning practitioners/theorists can contribute to knowledge, student learning, citizenship, as well as to solving the problems of the American city if they learn from history and build upon the work of their turn-of-the-century predecessors. It also argues that service-learning has benefits that can be accomplished with only a slight change in traditional approaches. The book provides an excellent transition from the conceptually oriented articles to case studies. Service-learning engages students in active doing, thus providing an opportunity for them to put their ideals into practice and make a contribution.
