ABSTRACT

As institutions of higher education and divisions of student affairs seek to address campus safety issues, it is vital that compliance with federal laws and attention to institutional liability be carefully considered. This chapter examines these legal implications of campus crime for student affairs professionals. It discusses the roles of specific student affairs functional areas in responding to campus crime. The portions of the act related to campus safety were formally renamed the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act in 1998. Compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is far more complicated than Security On Campus and other advocates have recognized. However, the very statistics collected under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act have demonstrated that college and university campuses are generally safer than their surrounding communities.
