ABSTRACT

College administrators, particularly those who ascended to administration via traditional academic routes, may not be formally trained in creating and maintaining safe campus environments. In this chapter, the authors identify resources administrators may find useful for both managing and preventing crises. They offer some suggestions about whom a busy college administrator might want to know and how to work with each group of professionals during a crisis. Practically every college campus has professional staff persons trained in crisis management (or skills translatable and useable during a crisis). The role of student affairs professionals during crisis is dictated to a large degree by the administrative organization of any given campus. Campus police officers are an obvious and valuable resource for college administrators dealing with crises. In this chapter, the authors discussed resources available to campus administrators for preventing and managing crisis.
