ABSTRACT

This chapter emphasizes the importance of choice as a way to create culturally affirming and meaningful assignments. The importance of all assignment options aligning with learning outcomes is described and cautionary words about choice, such as avoiding too many options that may become overwhelming, are shared. Three types of choices are discussed: content, product, and process. Content choices include allowing students to choose the topic or sources for the assignment. Product choices enable students to select how they will demonstrate what they have learned. For example, students may choose to write a paper, design a website, create an infographic, or give a presentation. Allowing students to decide if they want to work independently or with a partner or small group would be an example of a process choice.
