ABSTRACT

The first part of this chapter focuses on why instructors need to support students when they work on assignments. Several ways instructors can support their students are shared. First, instructors are encouraged to consider what assumptions they may be making about what students know. Next, instructors can determine what type of scaffolded examples would be most helpful. Instructors are also encouraged to incorporate formative assessments into the course and to help students connect with campus resources as needed. The second part of the chapter focuses on how to provide useful and affirming feedback to students. Instructors are encouraged to offer prompt, asset-based feedback that is specific, couched in positive phrasing, and encourages growth. Finally, several strategies to support students with peer feedback and self-correction are suggested.
