ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the Colorado State University Center for Public Deliberation (CPD) as a model for a campus-based deliberative center. From the beginning, the goal was for the CPD to be replicated, and over the last 12 years—with a considerable assist from the Kettering Foundation’s Centers for Public Life program—that has become a reality several times (i.e., similar centers have been developed at the University of Houston-Downtown, James Madison University, University of Iowa, Washington State University Vancouver, St. Edward’s University, University of Utah, and Baylor University). From the beginning, the CPD has been exceedingly student-centric yet community-focused. Each semester, the CPD student associate program brings in around 15 undergraduate students for a yearlong curricular experience. The clearest success derived from the CPD experience in its first 12 years involves its positive reception in the community.
