ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a centralized model for addressing high-impact practices (HIPs) at an institutional level; introduces a unique type of measurement and evaluation; and shares initial findings and suggests that such an approach provides actionable data that can lead to changes at the course, department, college, and institution levels. More specifically, it provides an overview of strategies and the development of Utah Valley University’s Five Pillars of Student Engagement as one stratagem toward addressing G, D. Kuh’s concern of an unsystematic approach, which does more harm at times than good to students’ education. The Five Pillars of Student Engagement organized and supported by Office of Engaged Learning are global and intercultural experiences, internships, community engagement, undergraduate research and creative works, and engaged curriculum. The SEGO Dashboard will become a tool for administration, faculty, and staff to assess and improve student engagement across the institution and to maintain the quality of HIPs.
