ABSTRACT

Students at California State University Monterey Bay (CSUMB) hail from traditionally underserved communities, and more than 30 percent are the first in their families to attend college. Like most students nationwide, students at CSUMB have grown up in a culture that depends equally on visual and auditory transmissions of knowledge and on that of the written word. As in all upper-division service learning classes at CSUMB, the course metaquestion necessitates the examination of both disciplinary and service learning themes, in this case linking social change and social justice. The chapter assesses the course metaquestion: “How can environmental restoration and community restoration be linked to address issues of social and environmental injustice?” It enables students to demonstrate the many course outcomes.
