ABSTRACT

Nearly every quarter, the author teach a course called Multiculturalism in the Criminal Justice System, in which she walk students through the centuries of slavery, Indigenous genocide, class repression, mass incarceration, civil uprising, and violence against women and queer communities that manifested the criminal justice system as it is today. In this chapter, the author offers a glimpse into the alternative pedagogical universe she find each quarter with this course, where her students bring their experiences from various marginalized communities to begin imagining what they want for those whose voices they represent and for those whose material and psychic realities they cannot fathom. She begins with a contextualization of the institution and student body, continues with a discussion of the course structure and goals, and ends with a list of classroom exercises that she have found to be helpful in accomplishing her pedagogical goals.
