ABSTRACT
Student incivility in college classrooms is more common than people may realize. In fact, it is increasing. This uncivil behavior is not aimed only at other students, as faculty are often the target of the worst classroom behavior by students. At its most innocuous, student incivility is disruptive to the learning environment and inhibits the effectiveness of the faculty member’s teaching. Classroom incivilities have been defined in various ways in the scholarship of teaching and learning. At its most base level, classroom incivilities are student behaviors that inappropriately disrupt the learning environment. Faculty incivility is one possible reason for student incivility. That is, when faculty are discourteous or rude in the classroom, it is thought that this leads students to behave in a similar manner. Unfortunately, incivility in the college classroom is not uncommon. In fact, student classroom incivilities have increased and are continuing to increase.
