ABSTRACT

A colleague of ours at Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC) was on the phone with a student affairs professional who focuses on religious and worldview diversity and interfaith issues on his campus. 1 As part of his support for religious minority students, he was working with the university swimming pool to schedule a time each week when the pool would be reserved for women only so that observant Muslim women could use the pool without violating their commitments to modesty by wearing swimsuits around men. The athletics staff was generally supportive, but they had one caveat: If a transgender woman wanted to use the pool during the women-only swimming sessions, they were adamant that she must be allowed to.
