ABSTRACT

Faculty play a central role in the planning of campus-wide efforts to internationalize, as they coincide with traditional faculty roles of teaching, research, and service to the campus community. This chapter focuses on the central role of faculty in advancing student learning abroad, first by contributing to the internationalization of the curriculum, and second by directing the curriculum toward the integration of education abroad into teaching and learning on campus. The Global Learning Valid Assessment of Learning in Undergraduate Education Rubric is one of a number of Association of American Colleges & Universities rubrics relevant to the education continuum that were created by faculty for faculty. Because it addresses students personal growth, intercultural learning may be the strategy that asks the most of faculty in setting learning objectives that use benchmarks such as respect for diverse backgrounds and perspectives, interrogation of ones own cultural identity, and openness.
