ABSTRACT

Some Higher education institutions (HEIs) have opted against working with external international education organizations (IEOs), while others engage solely on a transactional basis, with the IEO as vendor and the HEI as consumer. As education abroad programming continues to grow and diversify, however, it is time for the relationship between HEIs and IEOs to move beyond transaction to partnership. This chapter begins by summarizing the history of IEOs, then discusses the value and benefit of HEIs and IEOs partnering together. It concludes with a forward-looking view of the partnership, and a brief discussion of two challenges to education abroad and the partnership. The chapter argues that partnerships between HEIs and IEOs make education abroad possible, amplify its value, and strengthen education abroad contributions to undergraduate education. Education abroad, and the IEOs and HEIs that facilitate it, must be at the forefront of this relevance.
