ABSTRACT

IUPUI's electronic portfolio (ePort) aims to develop and document the kinds of higher-order learning outcomes today's students need to achieve in school and in the world—for example, abilities to think critically, integrate and apply knowledge in a dynamic world, work within diverse cultural contexts, and solve problems innovatively. This chapter discusses how ePort and the ePort initiative at IUPUI are structured to carry out these aims, focusing on a specialized form of reflective thinking, "matrix thinking", that has emerged from a research. As more departments adopt ePort, develop program-specific learning outcomes, and map these to the Principles of Undergraduate Learnings (PULs), the university as a whole will increase its ability to make assertions based on authentic work contained in ePort about students achievement of the PULs campus-wide. Share ideas about "advanced" vs. "introductory" reflection with students, so that they clearly understand the steps entailed in reaching the advanced level and the value of doing so.
