ABSTRACT

The University of Washington (UW) has been in the eportfolio business for a comparatively long time. So it may be surprising that when the Catalyst team began to develop an enterprise eportfolio in 2002 as part of the Catalyst suite of Web-based communication and collaboration tools, it did so without an institutional mandate. The entries received were instructive in their typology and purpose; out of 123 eportfolios submitted, only 4 (3%) were the type of “learning portfolios” most often promoted in the eportfolio literature. Catalyst offers Web-based tools, technology-infused learning spaces and facilities, and a host of knowledge services such as technology workshops, face-to-face consulting, Web-based "how-to" content, and original research on effective uses of technology. The tools and services are developed collaboratively, tapping the expertise of faculty, students, and staff, and Catalyst staff routinely work with central administrative units and with individual colleges, schools, and departments.
