ABSTRACT

At a young age, the author once overheard her aunt telling her friends that her own mother could not conceive soon after her marriage to her father, so they sought the help of an herbalist. That is how she started bearing children—eight of them. Because she come from a country where gender is mainly male or female, the author seek to broaden her views on gender. Nevertheless, she believe that everyone should be free. Her battle against sexism has been like many other married women, a silent one. Although the author have respect for the rich Yao culture, she feel that certain customs are very oppressive to women and that they need to be challenged. As a married Yao (African) woman, she was inspired by other women. Yao women, like other African women, have to bear children until they have a boy just to stay in a marriage, and where there are no modern conveniences, women and girls suffer.
