ABSTRACT

To the author, higher education represented the opportunity and freedom to explore all of the possibilities of the world and all of the possibilities of herself. Her search led her to Douglass College of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. At first, the author was accepted to a traditional private women’s college that was too expensive for her family. She was a bit skeptical that the unique design of Douglass—a public women’s college where women take most of their classes with men—would really provide her with the type of single-sex experience that she was seeking. At Douglass, women role models surrounded the author. On a daily basis, she was inspired by the Douglass deans, staff, and most importantly, her fellow Douglass students. After graduating from Douglass, the author moved forward in her career by working at a few other institutions of higher education and completing her master’s degree in College Student Personnel from the University of Maryland, College Park.
