ABSTRACT

Many women’s centers were founded in the 1970s and 1980s in response to second wavefeminism within the academy. Although women’s centers today have a prominentplace on many campuses, little is known about the work, including challenges and successes, done by women’s center staff in the current political andfiscal climate. A qualitative descriptive study of the experiences of 21 women’s center stafffrom a diverse array ofinstitutions revealed that women’s centers are vibrant, evolving hubs offeminist engagement with the academy. Challenges dictate that more resources, visibility, and social capital are needed to enable women’s centers to reach their full potential in pursuit ofgender equity.
