ABSTRACT

This chapter tells the story of six women administrators from the University of Maryland Baltimore County who created a women’s leadership group focused on issues of leadership, advancement, and power. As an intern working with the women’s leadership group, the author spent one semester learning about the experiences of these women and the significant potential of women-only cohort groups as one model for leadership development. The chapter highlights the formation of the group, the “work” of the group, important learning the women gained from participation in the group, and recommendations for starting similar groups. While there are many obstacles that hinder women from advancing into leadership positions in higher education, this may be one option to provide support and encouragement to women seeking to persevere despite the obstacles.
