ABSTRACT

The author had been looking forward to it for years, and suddenly it was real: she was a part of one of the most respected philosophy departments in the country, learning from some of the most brilliant minds in the field, and finally, living on her own. Coming to the University of Michigan as an undergraduate meant an opportunity to take her life in a different direction, personally and academically. During her senior year the author met a mentor who has really shaped the way she think about identity and the academy for the future. In the winter semester, she took a course with Jennifer Wenzel on postcolonial critical theory. The author had hoped to learn some things about the intellectual underpinnings of the identity work she had been a part of for the past few years.
