ABSTRACT

Engaged research is part of a broad concept that has become known as “engagement,” “engaged scholarship,” or “applied research.” The scholarship of application and the scholarship of engagement are complementary but call for different approaches to scholarly efforts and to work in the community. This chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on community-engagement research projects. It shares the author's experience of the National Forum working with a Detroit community on a project to improve educational opportunity. The book focuses on the perspectives shared by community partners in community-university partner relationships throughout the United States. It provides insight into the efforts of institutions in order to provide access to undocumented students despite ambiguous legislation and misinformation.
