ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the elements of power, collaboration, and social change in order to deeply explore the complexities of collaborative approaches between community and university partners for community change. It offers reflections on power, collaboration, and social change as connected to community-university partnerships. Social change efforts will not succeed if they do not deal directly with issues of power, difference, and diversity in the community-university relationship and within the communities in which they operate. Institutional power comes from the operation of laws, policies, procedures, and historical and cultural paradigms. A complex framework for collaboration between communities and universities is critical when working toward broad and deep community change. Current faculty and administrators are experiencing pressure to alter agendas in order to guarantee financial support.
