ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses a range of ways that student voices can be an integral part of the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL). It focuses on student voices in SoTL where SoTL is defined as the “systematic reflection on teaching and learning made public”. Thus, the chapter emphasizes student voices in SoTL research projects and defines research broadly because of disciplinary differences. Furthermore, recognizing that other institutions may define SoTL more broadly than this, it includes brief discussions of student voices in scholarly teaching and teaching improvement. A variety of benefits and challenges to the various ways students have voices in SoTL are discussed. The chapter aims to describe and illustrate the range of ways to obtain student voices. Because of the limited literature on outcomes of student voices in SoTL, it discusses some of the literature on outcomes of student involvement in research more generally.
