ABSTRACT

This chapter provides insightful counsel from those who have experienced and led during campus crises and is intended to enhance the crisis planning management process. It contains eighteen words of wisdom statements that are organized into five sections: prevention and mitigation, crisis planning and preparation (before the crisis), immediate response (first 24 hours), response (first 7 days), and campus healing. College administrators should employ a formal process that assesses students’ threatening behavior and centralize the process to mitigate student behavioral situations by monitoring students of concern, managing the flow of information, and intervening when necessary. The crisis response team should conduct mock, large-scale emergency drills annually; this will allow the team to function in a learning environment before it is called upon in an actual campus-wide crisis. Experiencing a campus crisis creates a demand for counseling services that will exceed the campus’s capacity.
