ABSTRACT

Texas State University (Texas State) values educational excellence in general education and all its educational programs. This chapter describes an example of a comprehensive student learning assessment process for a general education core curriculum. It examines the development of the curriculum, expectations of the assessment, strategies for course-based and comprehensive assessment, use of direct and indirect methods, and application of results. Further, academic administrators and faculty concerns need to be considered in the establishment of appropriate and useful assessment goals for general education. In establishing goals of the core curriculum, Texas State needed to address the state requirements and establish a clear path assessing the effectiveness of the general education courses in meeting the core components and competencies. Considering institutional accreditation principles, Texas State needed to ensure that its goals for general education meet the expectations of SACSCOC as well as state statutes.
