ABSTRACT

While the concept of learning at a distance is nearly 300 years old, the modern age has provided the technology to grow the practice across the globe. In recent years, the need for flexible learning opportunities skyrocketed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, removing the choice of learning modality for nearly all learners. This chapter provides an account of how the Office of Technology for Teaching and Learning at Wilkes University strategically began to address the usage disparity and the related faculty development needs. Wilkes University first offered online courses around 1999. Prior to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the vast majority of undergraduate classes were offered face to face. The development of a strategic plan provided a targeted opportunity to create initiatives around addressing known issues, such as gathering and reporting data related to D2L usage.
