ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the unique habits and methodologies of teaching social work and articulates how social work education’s signature pedagogy is more comprehensive than the senior capstone field placement. A review of the literature in both Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and signature pedagogies reveals a dearth of publications written by social work educators about social work education. As the accrediting body, Council on Social Work Education also establishes the core curriculum requirements in social work education, published in the Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards document. Embedded in the simulated case examples are ethical dilemmas that challenge students to apply the values, ethics, and cultural competence standards of the profession in simulated and live interviews. The ideas that support social work’s field placement as a pervasive capstone apprenticeship include the apprenticeship of identity and purpose.
