ABSTRACT

Articulating a signature pedagogy for the creative arts requires reflecting on which values and ways of knowing and doing are shared by the arts disciplines. The disciplines that come under the heading of the creative arts are rich and varied. In many ways, critique is the signature pedagogy in art and performance because of what it teaches students about the process of creating art, appreciating the form, and understanding objective and subjective assessment of particular styles and works of art. In theater, SoTL work has focused on portfolio assessment, understanding oppression, and using drama as an effective learning strategy. In the undergraduate theater classroom and studio, actors perform scenes, monologues, or other activities for an audience of classmates and the instructor, who then assess the performance. Despite differences between the undergraduate studio art and performance classroom, the use of critique and the dynamics connected to them are similar.
