ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and discusses the training and support of college-aged facilitators placed in metropolitan communities to conduct dialogues focusing on race and ethnicity among high school aged students. Therefore, Summer Youth Dialogues on Race and Ethnicity in Metropolitan Detroit (SYD) was established with support from the Skillman Foundation and the University of Michigan to address these community needs. Thus, there are two major foci of specialized training for SYD facilitators beyond that of their typical preparation to facilitate campus-based dialogues: considerations for dialogues among adolescents and considerations for dialogues in community settings. Similarly, the facilitators discuss their own commitment to social justice and positive community change, even as a youth dialogue facilitator. At the retreat and summit, facilitators coach the participants on how to be collaborators, advocates, and allies with others to work for positive community change.
