ABSTRACT

Skidmore College has been paying close attention to the retirement transitions of tenured faculty for a number of years. This chapter describes the context for the efforts and the process in starting the retiree association, which includes both faculty and staff and which draws on elements of the three kinds of associations (retiree associations, retiree centers, and emeriti colleges). While it is still very much a work in progress, the inclusive retiree association that is emerging at Skidmore College can claim both solid accomplishments and considerable promise as a model applicable to other institutions, particularly small liberal arts colleges. Accordingly, a minimal organizational structure, the Retiree Initiative Planning Group, emerged with the initial purpose of advising the college on the use of the funds. One challenge that Sloan funds are helping people meet is the crucial issue of communications among and with retirees.
