ABSTRACT

This chapter describes what Wellesley has done for retiring faculty in the past and the practical steps the college has taken to recognize and make effective use of their contributions, and explains how the institution has begun to address the larger questions raised by retirement. In addition to providing retirement counseling, the college seeks to make emeriti faculty feel welcome on campus and allows them to continue to use many college resources. Although in recent years Wellesley College had conscientiously addressed most of the practical issues involved in retirement, it—like most other universities and colleges—had no particular strategies to address the emotional and intellectual issues retirement evokes, at least for some people. Retired faculty who continue to work with students and who have either internal or external funding for their research are accommodated to the extent possible with appropriate research space, though finding sufficient space is an ongoing challenge.
