ABSTRACT

This chapter shares the current institutional context in which the emeriti (or soon-to-be emeriti) find themselves. It discusses opportunities for continued engagement and the challenges that face those retiring from University of California (UC) Davis. In addition, the chapter describes new developments in the unique approach to this expected postinstitutional demographic transformation and explains how some of the efforts can offer opportunities to emeriti faculty that will facilitate system-wide efforts to build excellence in an era of unprecedented institutional change. It provides data on faculty retirements over recent years to demonstrate why creating clear pathways toward a fulfilling retirement is important to the campus and to the UC system as a whole. The chapter also describes some of the benefits and challenges of being one campus that is developing its own retirement-focused programs within a larger institutional framework. It also discusses the enhanced opportunities that UC Davis has to engage emeriti faculty as the campus grows over the next decade.
