ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book discusses how higher education arrived at its current state of affairs regarding faculty retirement and the culminating stages of faculty careers. It discusses the psychosocial aspect of faculty life, which is especially pronounced in liberal arts colleges and institutions that have strong ties to their local community. The book highlights the community partnerships that senior and retired faculty have created. It steps back from the discussion of programs and offerings for senior and retired faculty and reframes discussions about retiring and retired faculty in a variety of ways. It provides portraits of three campuses whose leadership successfully turned known challenges for senior faculty into opportunities for positive change.
