ABSTRACT

The American Council on Education (ACE) has partnered with the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation since 2003 to raise awareness of the importance of workplace flexibility in faculty careers. With generous support from the foundation, ACE has conducted five awards competitions to identify best practices for faculty career flexibility within various types of institutions. This chapter outlines the project activities, summarizes key findings, and provides an analysis of survey results and highlights the award-winning institutions from the project’s awards competition. ACE found that there is a lack of transparency in supports available for faculty and that most faculty are unaware of existing supports. Institutions should proactively reach out to faculty using multiple communication vehicles. Some senior faculty indicated that generational differences within their department were so sharply defined that they felt uncomfortable. Most faculty want the health insurance transition to be explained and are worried that their health-care costs will be higher following retirement.
