ABSTRACT

Albright’s work on career and life balance, including retirement, is encompassed in the framework of life-course theories and continuity theories that take into account the entire life span. This chapter focuses on the psychosocial aspect of faculty retirement, particularly within the liberal arts sector, using Albright College as an exemplar of practice. Faculty seek employment in liberal arts institutions out of a desire to form strong collegial and student relationships and to be part of a vibrant and friendly intellectual community. By finding ways to alleviate sources of faculty stress, institutions of higher education can help make retirement a more positive and rewarding experience. Even faculty who are ready to step down from their full-time job may also be interested in maintaining some facets of their job that have contributed to their personal identity and intellectual engagement.
