ABSTRACT

The term disability is a bit of a misnomer. The term handicapped came and went and has various negative connotations. When it comes down to it, ability varies from one person to the next. Some abilities are beneficial, and some make it difficult to get around. There are medical definitions for the terms —such as disabled, handicapped, challenged—take on their own connotations past medical terminology. Students are to describe an ability that they are proud of, something that they are able to do mentally, emotionally, or physically. Maybe a student has won the high jump in track or can put both legs behind his head. After the students have written their descriptions, their papers are collected and then passed around anonymously. Each student writes a response to the person whose paper he or she has received.
