ABSTRACT

Developing an open framework by which to structure college-level essays allows students to grasp expectations about academic writing; it is only when students know what is expected that success can happen. To convey the basic essay structure to students, it is necessary to create learning opportunities where students practice once, and then once more, how to structure an essay; it is also paramount that students write the essay in sections in order to generate a more thorough and connected understanding of what constitutes college-level writing and critical thinking. This chapter provides numerous approaches and techniques for writing the various sections of the college-level essay while allowing each student’s voice and perspective to appear. To have an authentic personal voice and accurate textual analysis appear in the writing is worth stylistic clunkiness, the point being to have students progress. It is only by completing assignments that students will move forward.
